Accidents at your workplace

What to do if you have an accident at your place of work.

If you need treatment due to an accident that happened either at your workplace or on your way to or from work, it is not the statutory health insurance that will pay for the costs but either the statutory accident insurance or the employer's liability insurance association.

In such a case, please inform the doctor or hospital treating you that the accident occurred at work or on your way to/from work so that it can be billed accordingly. It is not necessary to present your insurance card.

You are also required to immediately inform your employer about the accident because a report describing the accident must be submitted to the statutory accident insurance. The employee is not required to pay a practice fee or co-payment for treatment at the statutory accident insurances expense. There are, however, fixed amounts for some medical services. If the costs for such services exceed the fixed amount (the doctor and the patient have to agree on such a treatment), then the patient has to pay the extra costs him- or herself.
