One option is to consult your gynaecologist. Midwifery units, birth centres and hospitals can also provide referrals and contact information. Or you can use the midwife search service ("Hebammensuche") offered by the Spitzenverband der Krankenkassen [German National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds] (only available in German).
Start looking for a midwife early on in your pregnancy, preferably at the end of the first trimester or the beginning of the second one. The midwife attends to you during pregnancy and after you have the baby. If you want to have your regular midwife present during birth in hospital, you will need to find an “attending midwife” (Beleghebamme). As these midwives are in high demand, we advise you to start looking for one even earlier.
If you give birth in hospital, the hospital midwives will assist you during delivery.
