European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

In case you fall ill on a trip within Europe you need the EHIC as legitimation of your health insurance. You find it on the back of your eHealth card.

As a TK member you also have insurance protection on your trips within Europe because Germany has entered into social insurance treaties with most European countries. Should you fall ill during your holiday you may claim all benefits in accordance with the law of the country of travel that cannot be put off until your return to Germany.

 

How it works

To receive treatment, just present your TK insurance card with integrated European health insurance card (EHIC, found on the back of your insurance card).

 

You can use the EHIC in the following countries:

Countries A-D

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus (only Greek zone)
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark (including Greenland)

Countries E - H

  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Great Britain and Northern Ireland
  • Hungary

Countries I - L

  • Iceland
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg

Countries M - P

  • Malta
  • Macedonia
  • Montenegro
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal

Countries Q - Z

  • Romania
  • Serbia
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

 

The EHIC is valid in the following areas, too:

  • Azores
  • Ceuta
  • French Guiana
  • Guadeloupe
  • Gibraltar
  • Greenland
  • Madeira
  • Martinique
  • Mayotte
  • Melilla
  • Miquelon,
  • Réunion
  • Saint-Pierre

Regions where you cannot use the EHIC:

In all other countries you cannot use the EHIC although they are associated or connected with Europe:

  • Andorra
  • Channel Islands, e. g. Jersey or Guernsey
  • Färoe Islands
  • Isle of Man
  • Kosovo
  • Monaco
  • Netherlands Antilles
  • San Marino
  • Svalbard
  • Vatican City

In Bosnia-Herzegovina, in Turkey and in Tunisia you will need a seperate form.
