Intensive out-of-hospital nursing care, known in German as "außerklinische Intensivpflege", is provided to the seriously ill who require 24/7 hour from trained carers. It is intended, for example, to support patients requiring continuous medical care, such as those who are artificially ventilated.

More details

Your doctor assesses whether you meet the requirements and issues a prescription. You decide where you wish to be cared for. However, it is important that this location is suitable for the care required. Possible locations include:

  • at home
  • in special community residential facilities
  • in nursing homes
  • at workshops for disabled individuals

How to ensure optimal intensive nursing care

If you are ventilated via the mouth or larynx, specialists from the following disciplines will issue this prescription:

  • internal medicine and pneumology
  • neurology
  • paediatrics and adolescent medicine
  • anaesthesiology
  • doctors with additional qualification in intensive care medicine
  • doctors with authorisation to assess potential  (Potenzialerhebung)

In all other cases, this prescription, known as Muster 62B, must be issued by a doctor specialising in your illness.

In addition to the Muster 62B prescription, we also require the treatment plan or Behandlungsplan in German. This treatment plan is issued by your doctor as Muster 62C.

You need to send us the new Muster 62B prescription and the Muster 62C treatment plan to the below address every 6 months:

Techniker Krankenkasse
20902 Hamburg

(no street name and house number are required)

We will commission the "Medizinische Dienst" [German Medical Service of the Health Insurance Funds] to visit you at the place where you are cared for 1 time each year. The expert will assess your need for care and submit a report to us. We will notify you of the results.

What do I have to pay for intensive home nursing care?

If you are 18 or over and not exempt from paying statutory co-payments, you pay a co-payment towards this care. The amount you pay depends on where you are cared for:

  • If you are cared for at home or a similar location, you pay 10 EUR per prescription plus 10% of the actual costs up to the first 28 days of the year.
  • In a nursing home or outpatient residential facilities, you pay 10 EUR per prescription plus 10% of the actual costs.

If you are cared for at home or in a community residential facility, you also pay for the costs of accommodation and catering. If this care is provided in a nursing home, we cover your share of the costs for the home. You only pay the co-payment for intensive care. The maximum co-payment is 2% of your annual family gross income, or 1% for those with severe chronic conditions.
