Six steps to problem solvingDescribe your problem.Collect ideas for a solution.Evaluate the idea. Choose the best one.Make a plan.Implement your plan.Review your success.1. Describe your problem.Think about your answers to the following questions:What is specifically stressing you out or hindering your success?Who is involved?What exactly is happening?What consequences does the situation have for you?What caused it?What do you want to achieve?Who could help you achieve it?If the problem is too complex, break it down into subproblems and analyse them one by one. This approach makes it much easier to deal with complex problems.2. Collect ideas for solutions.Have a brainstorming session. Collect all the ideas for taking action that come to your mind. What could you do to change the situation and overcome the obstacle? Let your imagination run free. Even friends or colleagues who feel the same way as you do can get involved. Let their ideas inspire you. Very important note: At this point, refrain from criticising your own ideas or those of others; that will give you the leeway to come up with many more.3. Evaluate the ideas and choose the best solution.At this point, it is now time to examine your ideas with a critical eye. What consequences do they have in the short and long term - for yourself and for the others involved? Review the pros and cons and choose the most feasible strategy.4. Make a plan.Plan how you want to implement your idea. When, where and how do you want your solution to become reality? Proceed systematically with your plan and examine whether your steps are realistic.5. Implement your plan.Now turn your plan into reality. The best way is to try it out in a simple situation first. Take your time and reward yourself for even small successes. You will gradually get closer to reaching your goal.6. Review your success.After some time has passed, check whether your plan proved successful. If yes, great! If not, use the problem-solving method again. Sometimes co-workers or friends can help come up with new ideas and perspectives.
