Working alongside my degree programme - can I remain insured as a student? Yes, if your degree programme is your main priority and your paid job is considered less important than your studies. In this case, you will keep paying for health and long-term care insurance as a student.
Income from the following types of jobs is not subject to additional contributions to health, long-term care and unemployment insurance. You can therefore remain insured as a student:Mini-job: you are allowed to earn up to 603 EUR no matter how many hours you work.Short-term employment: the job is limited to a maximum of 3 months (70 working days).Working students: you can earn any amount as long as you work no more than 20 hours per week.If the 20-hour week limit is exceeded due to weekend employment, evening or night hours or during holidays (semester holidays), the following must be taken into consideration:you have a limited employment relationship andyou do not work for more than a total of 26 weeks with a working week of more than 20 hours in a year.Do you have several jobs? For non-mandatory internships, the same rules apply as for jobs during your degree program.Mandatory internships are required vocational activities during your degree, as specified in your study and exam regulations. Since you stay enrolled at your university during these internships, you keep your student health insurance, no matter how long the internship lasts or how many hours you work each week.This also applies to students from foreign universities who do an internship in Germany.How am I health insured if I am self-employed during my studies?Even if you are self-employed during your studies, you may still be able to remain insured as a student. This depends on your weekly working hours, what you earn and whether you employ staff.Please contact TK on 0800 - 285 85 85 if you become self-employed or if there are any changes to the above criteria.
