How am I health insured as a PhD student?

If you start your PhD before completing your Master's or Diplom degree programme or the state examination, you may be insured with us as student. If you do not start your PhD until afterwards, then you may not be insured as a student. You will then need to be voluntarily insured.

Working during your PhD

If you are completing a PhD you may only take up employment as a working student if you are writing your dissertation, but have not yet completed your Master's or Diplom degree programme or the state examination.

This option is not open to doctoral students who start their dissertation after successfully completing a university degree programme. You will be compulsorily insured as an employee, the only exceptions to this are if you take on short-term employment or a mini-job.
