Early detection screenings and check-ups for children and adolescents Early detection screenings and check-ups in young years are vital for healthy development. Especially in the first years of life, it is important that a paediatrician checks the child's overall health and age-appropriate development. This allows diseases or developmental disorders to be detected and treated at an early stage.
Does TK cover the costs of early detection screenings and check-ups for children and adolescents?Yes! You just need to show your child's TK eHealth card at the paediatrician's or dentist's practice. If all requirements are met, such as the respective age limits, the practice will bill us directly.

Why are early detection screenings and check-ups so important? If detected early, many diseases or disorders affecting physical, mental and social development in childhood and adolescence can be remedied or at least mitigated. These include congenital malformations, metabolic disorders or blood diseases. During early detection examinations, paediatricians check, for example, the nervous system, the sensory organs, the skeleton and the muscles. They also look out for developmental and behavioural disorders and give tips on dental prophylaxis during the first year of life. In addition to these examinations, you can also have your child checked for dental, oral and jaw diseases. That is why, in addition to the prescribed U1 to U9 early detection screenings and check-ups, we also offer U10 and U11 examinations for children. The letter "U" is short for Untersuchung [check-up]. This closes the gap between the U9 check-up performed at 5 years of age and the J1 exam starting at 12 years. When are the screenings and check-ups done?

The first check-up, U1, takes place immediately following birth. If no doctor is present, this examination is carried out by the midwife.Starting with the U3, your paediatric and adolescent medicine physician usually performs the screenings and check-ups. The additional U10 and U11 examinations can also be performed by specially qualified primary physicians and specialists who are SHI-accredited doctors contracted with TK. Please ask your doctor’s surgery if they offer these exams. The second examination (U2) is also usually done in hospital, where you will also be given the yellow "Kinderuntersuchungsheft" [Your Child’s Medical Records] booklet; all examination results will be entered into this booklet. The booklet also contains additional information and explanations about each health check-up and screening.
