The decision as to whether or not a coronavirus test is free of charge depends on the type of test performed. A distinction is made between laboratory PCR tests, antigen rapid tests (these must be carried out by a specialist), and self-tests that can be taken at home.

More details

PCR test

Only the attending doctor can decide whether a PCR test is to be performed. As per the recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute, testing is required for those with grounds to suspect they have been infected. If the test is carried out by a doctor, TK also covers the laboratory costs amounting to 27.30 EUR per analysis in addition to the treatment costs. As such, insurees do not incur any additional costs. The test is settled via the eHealth card. If you are experiencing any symptoms, call your GP. Those affected should self-isolate prior to receiving the test result.

Rapid test

Free tests are now only available to vulnerable groups. These include, for example:

  • children up to age of five
  • pregnant women in the first trimester who have not yet been vaccinated
  • people visiting a hospital or nursing home
  • residents of facilities for integration assistance
  • those who cannot be vaccinated

The costs in such cases are borne by the federal government. If you have a red warning on your Corona warning app or plan to attend an event held indoors, then you must pay 3 EUR towards the costs. TK may not reimburse the costs incurred.

Self-tests

The costs for self-tests may not be reimbursed by TK.

Corona tests before and during inpatient hospital treatment

If the doctor at the hospital requires a test prior to hospital admission, this can be taken either shortly before or during the admission procedure. If you are admitted to hospital, the costs can be settled via your eHealth card directly with the hospital. You will not incur any additional costs.

Patients, who are being treated in hospital and who develop an infection, can be tested in hospital. However, if the hospital's testing concept requires a test irrespective of an infection, this can also be taken. Again, you will not incur any additional costs.

Corona tests before and during a rehabilitation measure

Prior to admission or treatment in a preventive care or rehabilitation facility, you are entitled to a free test if required by the facility. The test will, for example, be done in a public test centre, a doctor's practice or a pharmacy. The test can be repeated once during your stay. These tests are free of charge for you.

This also applies accordingly for those who are privately insured, for example, for your privately insured child during a mother-child convalescence treatment approved by us.

Billing is handled directly between the health care provider and the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung [Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians]. Regrettably, a refund by TK is not possible. This includes tests you obtained yourself or for which you paid privately.

Tests following a warning from the coronavirus warning app

If the corona warning app detects an increased risk of infection, please call either the Gesundheitsamt [public health office] or your general practitioner.
