We will check whether we can cover the costs before your treatment begins. For this, your dentist is required to draw up a treatment plan and send it to us. Once we have approved this plan, the contractually agreed costs will be billed to us directly via the TK eHealth card. Important: successful treatment requires the patient's active, focused cooperation. Teeth and gums have to be cleaned particularly thoroughly.

More details

Before your treatment begins, your dental practice will also inform you of any costs incurred for private treatment. Additional services which may be offered by your practice but which we are not permitted to cover include:

  • risk tests for the early detection of periodontitis
  • lab work, e.g. microbiological tests, enzyme tests and DNA analyses
  • periodontal treatment around dental implants
  • antibiotics inserted directly in the gum pockets
  • gum pocket disinfection using lasers or ozone therapy
  • long-term disinfectant treatment

Information on professional dental cleaning:

Dental practices often insist on professional dental cleaning as a preliminary to successful periodontitis treatment because any tartar present must be removed before the treatment begins. We have been contributing to the costs of professional dental cleaning since 1 October 2022. You will find more information here: Does TK pay for professional dental cleaning?

Long-term aftercare ensures the treatment is a success

Once your active gum treatment is complete, you can undergo supportive periodontitis therapy (SPT) for another two years. Follow-up treatments will be scheduled one to three times a year in agreement with your dental practice and depending on the severity of your gum disease. Besides checking your dental hygiene, the dentist will remove any biofilm and coating from your teeth. If we approved this, Thisthe aftercare period can be extended. subject to our prior approval.

Straightforward treatment for patients who need nursing care

If your health is severely impaired or you need nursing care and are unable or barely able to take care of your teeth, you may be eligible for a simplified form of periodontal treatment oriented to your needs. Just ask your dentist whether this rule applies to you.
